§ Expertise Nuclear project and risk management
A reactor physicist trained to run the programme.
A Master of Engineering Management built on nuclear regulation, risk analysis, quality control and operations research, and a full seismic risk study of a major dam.
The degree
After a doctorate and a decade of reactor-physics research, he completed a Master of Engineering Management at Ontario Tech University, conferred in May 2026. The coursework joined the nuclear and managerial sides of engineering: nuclear regulations and waste management, shielding engineering and advanced microdosimetry, project management, production management, quality control, risk analysis and operations research.
He describes the aim as merging the technical track of nuclear engineering with the managerial track of project management, and he argues that natural-science students gain from project management, production management and operations research as part of their education. An earlier graduate diploma in education and digital technology, also at Ontario Tech, covered leadership and teaching with educational technology.
A seismic risk study
His master’s project was a full risk study of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), for both the main dam and the saddle dam: identifying seismic hazards, working through their consequences, analysing the risk, and setting out mitigation measures (2025). Seismic hazard is also part of the safety case for any nuclear site.
Research as a managed programme
His doctoral work was itself a staged programme with each stage checked before the next began. He verified coupled-reactor theory against two Monte Carlo codes, validated those codes against the industry code on a full CANDU 6 core, and only then designed six models of a new reactor concept. Each stage produced a paper before the thesis drew them together. The research was funded by NSERC and UNENE and run on shared high-performance computing at Queen’s University.
How he approaches decisions
He writes that in the nuclear industry every decision, from a minor component update to a major strategic shift, carries weight, and that decisions there are a public trust rather than only a business matter. The practices he names are rigorous data analysis backed by first principles, a conservative approach that never trades safety for schedule or cost, and accountability shared across a team whose engineers are free to question assumptions.
